Still & Know

This devotional was written by Chloee Jean.

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. – Exodus 14:14

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! – Psalm 46:10

Did you know that being still is an action we, as believers, are called to do? Be still means to stop striving, stop fighting, relax. It also means to “put your hands down”. Sometimes we put our hands up to defend ourselves from all that life can bring our way. But, in these verses, God calls us to take a different action; to be still.

It’s hard to be still, especially when we’re constantly moving and on the go. It’s even harder to be still in the midst of a fight. You see, as humans, we have the tendency to fight or flight — meaning, either we’re going to stay and defend ourselves or we’re going to run away from the situation entirely. But, then there’s this third option that God gives us: to be still. We’re to simply be still in the problem and let God defend us. There is no running and no fighting involved, just stillness.

The beauty in being still is knowing that even though it looks like we’re surrounded, we’re actually surrounded by the army of angels God sends our way on the battlefield. We get to be still because He is fighting for us. God doesn’t stand still for us, He fights for us, but He can’t fight if we’re out there defending ourselves. If He did, we would only see what we did for ourselves, not what He did for us.

Friend, what is a battle that you’re refusing to be still in? Why are you refusing to let God fight for you while you’re simply standing still? The victory of the battle will be even more sweet knowing that the One Who goes before you fought for you and won for you. He’s doing it for you, not for Him. It’s our response to the victory we receive that brings God the glory due to Him.

Today, give the battle to God. Let Him fight for you while you simply stand still.

Chloee Jean is a youth leader, a Podcaster, a Digital Creator, Worship Leader, Social Media Manager, and a firm believer in Christ. She was born and raised in a Christian home and spent her days as a little girl singing songs, playing around on the piano, and drawing with her crayons. After years of hardships and trials, Chloee found escape in her music and writing her own lyrics. She pursued a Worship Leader certificate at Bethel Music’s Worship School. When she completed her course, she led worship with her sister, Aliseea, at a small youth group they were both currently serving in. After they both stepped down from that role and during 2020’s pandemic, Chloee started her own podcast called W.O.W and small business, Simply by Chloee Jean. She now finds joy in speaking God’s Word, singing about it occasionally with her sister, and creating digital designs to point others back to God and His Word. When Chloee isn’t designing or podcasting, she spends quality time with her family by having game nights, a movie marathon, or even jamming out to some worship songs.
